no.1104

Water by itself has no distinct color. It lends colors from its surroundings. It mirrors the trees, it echo’s the sky, it shows its transparent view of it’s underlying bottom.

We as humans are in a way similar. We take the shape and colour of our environment. So we better look for a scenery we love.
Surround yourself with people and thoughts that uplift you, shine your brightest colors and inspire others to do the same.

With Love Lies

'Human nature is like water.
It takes the shape of its container.'

Sometimes I’m asked to paint a miniature commissioned. This time it was a question coming via a church in France. This church stands in the place St Simeon and they liked me to paint their name giver.

It is said Saint Simeon started his life being an ordinary shepherd’s son. Though when he grew up he choose a new and strange form of asceticism. He wanted to devote his life to praying.
And while he did not manage to escape the world 'horizontally' because he was constantly disturbed by people who came to him for prayers and advice. He tried to ease up his world by leaving it vertically. He found a very high pillar and decided to live on top of it on a very small platform to have enough time for quieting his mind with meditation. But still people came to him from far away to receive his useful advice and compassion.

Well I would never want to live alone on a high pillar away from the lively world, but I do like to quiet my mind.
Painting and especially the miniatures, is my best and easiest form of meditation. But it can also be writing without thinking to empty up. Or walking outside preferably with a dog:-). And of course just close my eyes and be still.

Do you have a way to silence your thoughts? I would like to hear about it.

This one is a special edition, I made it to celebrate my exhibition of freshly made French paintings. It's fun to paint food, especially abroad. It is as if you have a closer look on everything and as a painter the whole fun of what I do is already zooming in on everything I encounter.

The artichoke is like an art object with its uniform structure of sturdy shells that, like scales of an armadillo, neatly fall over each other. It has a hard stinging exterior and a very soft little heart tucked safely inside. That in itself seems to be a methaphor for the way many people live their lives. Hardened, armed even by all the events that took place in growing up but mostly with the same soft, loving heart like when you were a baby.

Let's try to open up a little today, and show your surrounding a glimpse of your tender inside.

Look at you, parrot tulips in various colours. The way you are still standing strong. Some of you already lost your petals and most of you are on the verge of being totally overblown. But to me you look stunningly beautiful.

Sometimes you can combine the good with the good. 'Dog-sitting' in France and painting the view when you are taking her for a walk. It was dog/goat/sheep/rabbit/chicken and guinea-pig-sitting to be honest and I loved it. Life can feel so nice and simple on the countryside. But living in Amsterdam is also great and driving back home I saw some pretty views too. Like to share this one with you.

I'm in France again doing a paintingproject on the river Le Grand Morin. But in the meantime like to paint some little mini's from things around my stay. The last time I was here there was a very very old goat lady named Trix which I think deserves a little painting. I love that she had this totally saggy body with sagging hooves but still she was so happy of mind.

Some of you might remember why I like to send you a miniature with flowers on the first of july, it’s to remember a very special person and of course to celebrate life at the same time. This is an impression of a cornfield with flowers in France. Hope we all have a great summer!

We had to take a quick detour to France to bring some of my paintings there. I am so pleased to been asked to exhibit some of my work, big and small, in the center of Paris. More details will follow soon on my exhibit page. Unfortunately we can't stay till the vernissage at May 15 so we will return for the finnisage. But if you are in Paris for the next three weeks do try to visit Chromatics at Espace Beaurepaire.
